What this extension does

Subtitle Overlay has one job: display subtitles the user supplies on top of any HTML5 video playing in the browser. The user provides subtitle content either by pasting a direct URL to a subtitle file or by uploading a local file (SRT, WebVTT, or ASS/SSA). The extension parses that file and renders the subtitle text over the currently playing video, in sync with playback, with a user-adjustable timing offset and appearance controls (font, size, color, position). It does not download video, block ads, run analytics, or modify pages for any other purpose.

What it accesses, and what happens to it

  • The current tab's URL — read locally to scope a one-time permission request to that specific site. Never stored or sent anywhere.
  • The subtitle file you provide — fetched only from the URL you paste, or read from the file you upload. It's parsed into timed text and displayed on screen; it is never stored beyond the current browser session and never sent anywhere except the one request needed to fetch a URL you supplied yourself.
  • Appearance preferences — font, size, colors, position and outline choices are saved locally via Chrome's on-device storage so they persist next time you use the extension. Nothing here ever leaves your device.

No analytics, telemetry, or usage tracking of any kind is included in this extension.

Permissions, and why each is needed

activeTab
Lets the popup identify the current tab so it can request access scoped to that tab's site — nothing more.
scripting
Injects the overlay and on-page controls into a tab, but only after you explicitly click "Enable on this site" and approve the one-time permission prompt for that domain.
storage
Saves your appearance preferences on-device, as described above.
Host access
Requested at runtime, one site at a time, only when you click "Enable on this site" — never granted for all websites up front. You can revoke it for any site from the popup at any time.

Sharing and sale of data

We do not sell, rent, or transfer any user data to third parties. We do not use any data for purposes unrelated to displaying subtitles, and we do not use or transfer data to determine creditworthiness or for lending.

Children's privacy

This extension is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from anyone, regardless of age — as described above, it does not collect personal data at all.

Changes to this policy

If this extension's data practices ever change, this page will be updated and the "Last updated" date above will reflect it.
